Visiting the Austin Zoo

 

Its location is southwest of Barton Creek Habitat Preserve in Austin. The animal sanctuary and rescue houses more than 300 animals from 100 different species throughout the year. Austin Zoo offers a feeding area, a train ride, and regular educational demonstrations for kids and adults!

 

MEET THE ANIMALS

Based in west Austin's hills, the zoo was founded in 1999 as a goat ranch and animal rescue. As a sanctuary, the zoo cares and rehabilitates exotic animals as well as retired zoo animals and research animals. The following species are represented:

 

Learn more about lions and tigers' endangered status up close. The Metro Richmond Zoo just welcomed two new cheetahs Daya (6 years old) and Amina (7 years old).

Meet three young black bears who were rescued and rehabilitated by staff in Austin.

 

Check out monkeys, lemurs, and marmosets interacting and trying to identify them all!

The zoo grounds are home to a wide variety of exotic bird species, including peacocks, chickens, and geese.

Be sure to check out the Leucistic Texas Rat Snakes, which are primarily found in Texas.

Longhorns in Texas aren't just any cattle, they are a source of pride. Visit the zoo to take a picture with this iconic animal.

Discover the smaller organisms that live at the zoo with your magnifying glass! Take a close look at these native Texas species to catch a glimpse of ants, lizards, birds, and butterflies.

Education Programs

There are several educational programs available at the Austin Zoo. Attend a zookeeper chat to learn more about a particular species of animal. Families can enjoy 90-minute family programs on Sunday mornings, and kids ages 6-10 can enjoy all-day camps on select Saturdays. Close Encounters

Experience the zoo's resident animals up close! Experience a 30-minute encounter with Diego, Enrique, Olivia, or Muffet, Gertie, and Wheezy, the Galapagos tortoises. The website of the zoo provides information concerning scheduling and prices.

 

Train

Taking a 20-minute train ride through Texas Hill Country is sure to be an exciting experience! Each half hour, the ride runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets cost $5 each.

 

Picnic Areas

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks to the zoo, so pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the fresh air. There are picnic tables throughout the zoo grounds, and there is a concession stand with snacks available during the weekends.

 

Gift Shop

A visitor can purchase Domestic Animal Food for $300 to feed the animals at the Austin Zoo Gift Shop! This store sells a variety of apparel and souvenirs.

 

HOURS & ADMISSION

On weekdays and weekends, the Austin Zoo is open between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (February 1 - October 31). Winter hours at the zoo are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Each day, admission closes an hour before the zoo closes.

 

The price of general admission is $1695 for adults, $1595 for students, military and seniors 60 and older, $1395 for children, and $1195 for members. In the gift shop or on the website, you may purchase your tickets in advance.

 

Located on site is a free and convenient parking area. Bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable walking shoes! Donations are appreciated.

 

When visiting the zoo with young children, attending zookeeper chats and feeding times, as well as riding the train, you'll want to factor about three hours into your itinerary. Adult groups can expect to spend about 90 minutes visiting all the enclosures.
